<Introduction to the Symposium>

Around the turn of the twentieth century the world was moving towards an idyllic cosmopolitanism.
Industries were booming and prominent industrialists came to the fore in countries like the USA,
Japan, and Great Britain.
Wealthy investors were simply making money all over the world that was interconnected by commerce, trade, and technology.
Traveling to New York, London, Baku, Bombay,Tehran or Tokyo was an exciting adventure for well-to-do global citizens, and
it was relatively safe.
In this benign vision of human development, it seemed that universal peace would last forever.
Gardens, always an asset of the wealthy, were of course affected by this cosmopolitanism.
While some garden makers in Japan experimented with fashionable landscape designs in novel Western
styles, Westerners too became interested in the Japanese tradition.
What were the ideas that traveled to and from Japan, how did it translate in space and in design?
Such questions will be dealt with by eminent speakers from within and outside Japan.

* Lectures in English (or with simultaneous translation)
