 | Freer Gallery of Art & Arthur M. Sackler Gallery

The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, the Smithsonians National Museum of Asian Art, will host a virtual symposium, East Asian Painting Conservation: Perspectives on Education, Research, and Practice. Organized by the East Asian Painting Conservation Studio, Department of Conservation and Scientific Research, the symposium will be a Zoom webinar scheduled over three days: June 29, June 30, and July 1, 2021. There will be two presentations with a Q&A each day from 8:0010:00 a.m., United States eastern daylight saving time (EDT) to accommodate international speakers and audiences across multiple time zones.

Supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, this is the fourth symposium in a series on East Asian painting conservation that began in 2015 at the Cleveland Museum of Art, followed by symposia at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 2016 and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2019. This years symposium will gather a diverse group of six speakers whose experience, knowledge and research will advance our understanding and appreciation of East Asian painting conservation through related disciplines.
