- Born in Tokyo in 1957. Graduated from the Cooper Union School of Architecture. In 1982, worked for Arata Isozaki & Associates. In 1985, founded Shigeru Ban Architects. Serving as a consultant for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) since 1995, he has also established an NGO called the Voluntary Architects' Network (VAN). Major works include "House of Curtain Wall," "Hanover Expo. Japan Pavilion," and "Nicolas Hayek G Center." The new Pompidou Center was completed in Metz, France in May 2010. Awards received include the French Academy of Architecture Gold Medal (2004), the Arnold W. Bruner Memorial Award Architectural Category World Architecture Award (2005), the Thomas Jefferson Award for Architecture (2005), the Architectural Institute of Japan Grand Prize (2009), La Legion d'honneur (2009), l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France (2010) and Pritzker Architecture Prize (2014). Served as professor in Keio University's Faculty of Environment and Information Studies from 2001 to 2008.
