Decode - Kohei Nawa
The exhibition brings together Nawa's latest works on paper and canvas. Thick white paint, engineered to the required
viscosity, drips neatly in dots on hemp canvas in a series titled “White Code” (2022), appearing as a sheet of music or
streams of codes on the digital screen. Drawings from Nawa’s new “Plotter” series (2022) feature lines created by an
autonomous and self-constructed device with ballpoint and thin brush pens programmed to run a simple script—to draw
a straight line. Subtle changes in conditions of paper, ink, and the narrow gap between the paper and the stainless base
plate result in unexpected variations of lines. In “Dune” (2020 - present), Nawa pours the mixture of water and paints with
different granularities, which spreads over tilted support. The result evokes the local elevations of the earth’s surface and
the circulation of its atmosphere—exploring the liquid properties of the paint while playfully deceiving human cognition.
An entire section of Arario’s white cube is dedicated to “Dot Array - Black” and “Line Array - Black” (2022). These
consecutive series of paintings illustrate overlapping dots and lines, in which subtle differences in the imagery and the
changing light reflection ask for the viewer’s enduring attention.

Polyphony - Mika Ieda, Mitsuhiro Ikeda, Nanami Inoue, Toru Kamiya, Kengo Kito,
Koga Miura, Yuki Saegusa, Kohei Yamada, Aiko Yuno
Shown concurrently at the gallery’s Project Space is the group exhibition, “Polyphony,” showcasing works by nine
Japanese artists—Mika Ieda, Mitsuhiro Ikeda, Nanami Inoue, Toru Kamiya, Kengo Kito, Koga Miura, Yuki Saegusa,
Kohei Yamada, Aiko Yuno.
Among these are Toru Kamiya’s refreshingly abstract paintings, inspired by the abstract expressionism of post-war
America. He has been delving into the particular artistic domain of the ‘color field’ where color is deemed the prime
objective of a piece of artwork. In the quest for contemporary art, Kamiya corresponds to early movements in painting
with his consistent practice of the gradation of pure colors. At the same time, Kengo Kito’s tableau is made by
accumulating materials such as acrylic paint, glitters, spray paint, glass chips, and paints, taking a critical standpoint on
present-day society with various bright colors.
The unique deployment of colors and forms found in the exhibited works brings about the effect of convergence and
synergy between color and light, artifacts and organic matters, and body and urban scape—themes that resonate
throughout the exhibition.
